Up to now, ChatGPT only worked when you were working. You asked a question, it answered, and the moment you closed the tab, it went quiet. At its DevDay event in San Francisco on September 29, 2026, OpenAI changed that. The company introduced Dots, a new kind of always-on agent that keeps working toward your goals even after you log off, sleep, or move on to something else entirely.

If an AI that handles real work without you hovering over it sounds like a big leap, that is because it is. Here is what Dots actually are, how they work, and what they could mean for the way you and your team get things done.

What OpenAI's Dots actually are

A Dot is not just a smarter chatbot. Each one is a persistent agent that lives inside ChatGPT and comes with its own cloud computer and its own web browser. OpenAI describes them as "remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle everything," and they run on GPT-6 Astra, the model the company rolled out on September 3.

That setup matters. Because a Dot has its own computer in the cloud, it can keep running a task in the background for hours without you keeping an app open. It can connect to more than 4,000 apps, learn from your feedback over time, and get better at the specific jobs you hand it. You can talk to a Dot through the ChatGPT desktop app, the mobile app, the website, inside Slack or Microsoft Teams, or even by hopping on a voice call with it. Text-message support is on the way.

How a Dot works while you're away

The simplest way to picture a Dot is as a tireless assistant that does not need you in the room. You give it a goal, and it works on that goal around the clock. In OpenAI's demos, Dots scheduled meetings, organized travel from start to finish, debugged software, and worked through tangled to-do lists without being babysat at each step.

Because each Dot has its own browser, it can navigate websites, fill out forms, and complete bookings the way a person would, then report back when it is done or when it hits something that needs your call. Conversations with a Dot do not count against your normal ChatGPT usage limits, which signals that OpenAI wants people leaning on these agents heavily rather than rationing them.

What it means for you and your team

Here is the part that matters for your workday. One Dot comes included with the $100-a-month ChatGPT Pro plan, and the rollout also covers Business Premium users, with extended usage limits in the first month so people can push the agents hard and see what they can do.

The promise is straightforward: the repetitive, time-eating parts of your job, the scheduling, the research, the booking, the follow-ups, can run on their own while you focus on the work only you can do. The honest caution is just as important. An agent that acts on its own across thousands of apps is powerful, and power without oversight is where mistakes and security gaps creep in. Before you hand a Dot your calendar, your inbox, or your company's accounts, it is worth starting small and watching closely.

The bigger picture is that OpenAI has moved AI from something that answers you to something that acts for you. For businesses, that shifts the question from "how do we use AI to draft things faster" to "which parts of our operation are we comfortable letting an agent run." That is a very different conversation, and it is the one most teams will be having over the next year.

For now, Dots is OpenAI's clearest bet yet that the future of AI is agents that work, not just chat. Whether you are ready to trust one with your to-do list is the question only you can answer, but the technology to do it is now live.
