Most startups would consider a $2 billion offer from Meta the win of a lifetime. For an AI company called Manus, that deal falling apart turned out to be the beginning of an even bigger story. After the acquisition collapsed, Manus went independent again and just raised more than $500 million on its own. Here is how that happened.

What Manus does

Manus, run by a parent company called Butterfly Effect, builds general-purpose AI agents. These are software tools that can carry out tasks like research and automation with very little human input, the kind of do-it-for-you AI that a lot of companies are racing to build right now. That ambition is what made Manus attractive to a giant like Meta in the first place.

The Meta deal that fell apart

The path here was anything but smooth. Meta acquired Manus in December 2025, after the startup moved its headquarters and key staff from China to Singapore. But in April, China's state planning agency stepped in and banned the acquisition, ordering the parties to cancel it. Meta then began untangling itself, even cutting Manus off from its internal data systems by June.

Rather than let the company die in limbo, early investors moved to buy Manus back at its original $2 billion valuation. By August, Manus announced it would resume operating independently. It was a rare case of a startup getting pulled back out of a big tech acquisition, largely because of government intervention.

The $500 million comeback

That brings us to the new raise. Butterfly Effect just closed a funding round of more than $500 million, led by Boyu Capital and IDG Capital, with existing backers like Tencent and ZhenFund also joining. Reports suggest the round values Manus at around $4 billion, roughly double the price Meta was going to pay.

The company has not said exactly how it will spend the money, but the message is clear: investors believe Manus is worth far more on its own than it was as a Meta acquisition. A deal that looked like a disaster became a springboard.

What it means for you

Manus is a reminder that the race to build capable AI agents is global, fiercely competitive, and increasingly tangled up in politics. Deals between the biggest players can be blocked by governments, and that can reshape who owns the most promising technology.

For businesses watching the AI agent space, the takeaway is that this market is still wide open and extremely well funded. Half a billion dollars flowing into a single agent startup, at double its former price, tells you investors expect AI agents to be one of the defining products of the next few years. If agents that act on their own are coming for your industry, now is the time to understand them.
